I say, “chumma”,
Dab (from Delhi) says, “what’s chumma?”
“Its Tamil for ‘simply’”, I reply.
He says, “oh you know what it means in Hindi?”,
‘Yes I do’
(We laugh. Lame I know. But it was after work and we were extremely bored and hungry. We would’ve laughed at anything.)
Dab continues, “why do people say chumma for everything? Its irritating.”
Because this is south India and in our language ‘chumma’ means 'simply'. Hindi is not our language and we do not identify ourselves with it in anyway, and most of us don't even care. So please, don’t expect us to know Hindi, because we don’t expect you to know our language.
